when we tell people that all tea comes from one type of plant they are usually truly surprised. all teas be they black, green, white, pu-er or oolong come from the Camellia sinensis plant. what distinguishes the tea type, variation and flavour is of course climate, geography and how it is picked, manufactured and processed.

it is a beautiful plant and we are in our process of planting many one and two year old seedlings and several three and four year olds.

well it has been ideas and dreams that have moved us along and now a new chapter at the farm is alive and real.

we have just received our lovely and amazing camellia sinensis... yes tea is here on the farm!

we are preparing the soil and terracing and will be planting when there is no risk of night frost.

we have become intimately connected to the tasting cups we are creating for the victoria tea festival this weekend. the process is multi faceted. at this point the cups are brushed with a green oxide over the stampings. the oxide dries and then the excess is rubbed off leaving some in the imprint... many many times.

what you are looking at are the bottoms of the tasting cups that have been individually inscribed with a number in a series of 800. the clay is drying and the number will be scraped to remove the excess clay.

at last years victoria tea festival we sold artfarm tasting cups to folks who wanted a real tea tasting experience. we had the idea to partner with the festival to donate tasting cups as a way to raise money for camosun child care services and contribute to an improved sustainable tea experience.

well... here is part of the tasting cups journey as we work towards the festival on february 13+14 2010.

clay is an amazing medium to create in. form and function are shaped with skill and patience. one does not rush clay. here it is in its wet malleable form. clay has memory . clay has resilience.

in our first year of farming we have had some successes and some unsucesses. the sweets were nice but we suffered a big frost followed by several days of rain. bruised and split sweet potatoes aint a pretty sight. crying farmers aint a pretty sight either. oh well.

enough survived for us to determine what the best varieties will be for next year and oh boy are we gonna have fun doing a better job of soil preparation and getting them in way earlier.

so if ya take the good with the bad... the good has certainly been the potatoes. our fingerlings are simply exquisite and the best potatoes in the westholme valley!

it is harvest season and farming sort of took priorities. so here we are a month since our last blog and we are so excited to be showing you our sweet potato happiness. this has been an amazing summer for growing and we have had fun experimenting with melons as well. we are digging up the sweets today and will have them at the markets soon. fingerling potatoes are coming out daily so look for them or let us know if you want some. we will post more pictures soon too.

we have artichokes that will be at the saturday duncan farmers market in the square downtown duncan 9am-3pm. when trimmed they look like green roses!

we grew a seven pound broccoli and continue to have them at both makaria farm market on tuesdays. thats just off the trans canada on bench road south of duncan 4-630 pm.

this is one of our favourite times of the year. the good hot weather has made haying season fun hard work. our larger field produces wonderful hay that we share with our neighbours and use for mulch throughout the year. fred got a little workout and the barn smells amazing... and yes that is a disco ball in the barn!

we will be at the duncan farmers market this saturday from 9am-3pm. come and see our new idea we call the salad bouquet.

Sunday we will be having our tea tastings from 2-5pm at the farm. it is supposed to be hot so come for an interesting surprise.

the next five days, from today thursday through monday, we will be part of and hosting the annual cowichan valley visions studio art tour.

for the past three years now we have had the fun of having several hundred people come to the farm and experience margit's ceramic art and the the natural surroundings.

this time means there are many firings in the kilns happening, the farm gets a little gussied up and have the great anticipation of meeting new people and welcoming back many friends/artfarmers.

the sizzle and the steak

there is a saying in advertising that 'you dont sell the steak ... you sell the sizzle'. margit commented the other day that she thought the blog seemed a bit 'ladida' and that we were not telling the whole story of what goes on on the farm. missing was how the work gets done. so... here is some of the steak that get things done around here.

most everything else gets done by hand. the days have been long, tiring adn yet very satisfying. we have planted four varieties of potatoes including fingerlings which are small lovely potatoes. pictured here are the sweet potatoes we are excited about growing. we are planting them with black poly mulch to keep the heat in and weeds out. we have six northern varieties that still require 90 days of good heat units.

this is fred.
fred is a 1967 ford pick up that helps us with work on the farm. fencing, haying, manure and much more happens with fred.

so thats part of the story adn of course there will be more to come.

the past week or so has brought dreaming and doing together in the hot weather of this early summer. here are several pictures telling the story of sandy walker our neighbour on his 1955 ford 600 tractor, who turned the lower field into the field of our dreams... and the work of planting 400lbs of seed potatoes, sweet potatoes, melons and cukes. new tea infusions are being created and the growing conditions are great for all the other yummies going on.

What a great day we had this past Sunday with our weekly tea tastings. The weather was gorgeous, the teas were delicious and the company delightful. the sun is shinning just a bit richer these days and the warmth of growing is with us. the labyrinth is coming back alive in the field below the barn and as the rich peat soil dries a bit more we will be putting in potatoes for a late fall crop. margits daffys are all abound and as we continue to plant peas + salad greens + carrots + beets + leeks + herbs our nails are gettin dirty with lotsa love.

well time has slipped by again since our last post adn mostly it has been because we have been getting ready for the growing season. we had tremendous fun and some success with taping our big leaf maples for syrup. yup... syrup. here are some pics to tell the story and come next year it will be available for tasting and taking home!

garlic is in the ground and artichokes are seeded, the lavender is coming alive and we have just harvested nettle for a new tea blend. the duncan farmers market this saturday april 4 will be our first time at the market so come see us there! the studio is still open thursday through sunday 10-4. if it ever stops snowing and starts getting hot... there will be lots growin on at the artfarm.

Wow! What a wild month it has been creating and preparing for the wonderful 1-day ART+TEA event at our Artfarm last Saturday. With an amazing group of co-creators the ARTFARM was transformed into an eclectic mix of many things. Follow below and re-experience the day the way it looked from many different eyes.
We decided to create cups that would serve as tickets. And because we were sure ART+TEA would be a huge success we made lots...

The corners of the farm were cleaned up and the studio polished for the day. We erected two tipis and set them up as Morroccan and Japanese teahouses.

Millie, Chris and Angela were the belly dancers for the day. Their artful performances brought a new and wonderful experience to the ARTFARM.

Most of the studio was emptied. The tea bar was at one end and Margit shared the studio space with four other artists - Cory Judge from Shi Studio Design, Sharon A. Stone, Angela McDiarmid, and Rob Gentleman from Green Earth Woodworks.
The weather cooperated beautifully. We served lots of tea, baklava and sticky rice goodies -

August 23, 10 - 4 pm - ART+TEA. This is a funtastic day of fusion - a Moroccan and a Japanese teahouse set in two spectacular North American tipis. Tea tastings, exotic teas for sale, belly dance and art for sale by several local artists exhibiting at the beautiful ARTFARM in the heart of the Cowichan Valley.

General admission to the ARTFARM is free and entrance to ART+TEA is $10 and includes a ceramic ARTFARM cup, which acts as a ticket to the two teahouses, sweets and belly dance performance (at 11am+2pm)
